RELIABLE AND COST-EFFICIENT REMOVAL OF PFAS INCLUDING CHALLENGING SHORT-CHAIN MOLECULES

The sufficient removal of short-chain PFAS molecules using activated carbon is challenging. Especially in the presence of long-chain molecules, granular activated carbon solutions lead to fast breakthrough times of short-chain molecules and thus to insufficient PFAS retention or very high replacement costs.

CERAFILTEC has demonstrated in a 3-month operation the effective removal of short-chain PFAS molecules.

Key facts of the demonstration:

✅ Water source: river

✅ Treated water volume: ~2,600 m³ (0.7M gal)

✅ Filtration duration: 24 hrs (backwash 1x per day)

✅ Recovery rate: 98.80%

✅ EBCT: below 30 sec

✅ PFPeA removal: 99.999%

✅ PFBS removal: 99.312%

✅ PFPeS removal: 99.999%

✅ PFBA removal: 99.999%

It is expected that the full report can be published within the next 2-3 months.

Carcinogenic PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contaminate the tap water of over 100 million Americans. Also, Europe, Asia and Australia suffer from these hard-to-remove “forever chemicals”. New PFAS hot spots are identified daily, exposing nearby populations to serious health risks. Several hundred billion USD are estimated to remove PFAS from our tap water in the US alone. Current water treatment solutions are struggling with high operating costs, large volumes of concentrated PFAS waste, and reliability…
